What Is 4-Axis CNC Machining?
4-axis CNC machining is a subtractive manufacturing process that adds a rotary axis to the three linear X, Y, and Z axes used in conventional CNC milling. The additional rotary axis allows the workpiece or cutting tool to rotate during machining, providing access to multiple sides and features of a component without manually repositioning the part.
This additional axis makes 4-axis CNC machining particularly effective for components with features positioned around a central axis, angled surfaces, multiple side features, and complex profiles that would require several setups on a 3-axis machine.
