Custom Cold Headed Knurled Fastener

When a client needed a custom steel fastener with a precise knurled finish and tightly controlled dimensions, they turned to The Federal Group for a production-ready solution. Using SAE 1018 steel and precision cold heading techniques, we manufactured the fastener to meet the customer’s dimensional requirements while incorporating the knurled feature into the finished part.

The Challenge: A Fastener with a Critical Knurled Feature

The application required more than a standard headed fastener. The custom component incorporated a diamond-knurled section designed to provide a secure mechanical interface while meeting specific dimensional requirements.

The customer’s drawing included tight tolerances on the knurled diameter, head dimensions, and body geometry. The part required a manufacturing process capable of producing these features consistently and economically at production volumes.

A Custom Cold-Heading Solution

The Federal Group manufactured the fastener from SAE 1018 steel using cold heading and cold-forming processes. The process efficiently formed the fastener geometry while maintaining material integrity and a consistent finished profile.

The diamond-knurled feature was incorporated into the manufacturing process to maintain the required geometry and dimensional control while reducing the need for secondary machining. Our custom fastener manufacturing and cold forging capabilities provide efficient solutions for producing complex metal components to customer-specific requirements.

Precision Inspection Across Production

Because the knurled diameter and other dimensions were critical to the application, inspection was an important part of the production process.

The Federal Group uses dedicated gauges to verify critical dimensions and confirm that finished fasteners remain within specification. The inspection videos accompanying this case study demonstrate the use of different gauges to check the finished parts and verify dimensional consistency.

This combination of cold forming, controlled knurling, and dimensional inspection allows us to maintain repeatability from part to part while supporting efficient production.

The finished fastener delivered the required combination of strength, dimensional control, and knurled surface geometry in a production-efficient cold-headed design.
