Seamless and Welded Pipes

The Federal Group USA is a Global manufacturer of both seamless and welded pipes. The primary material used in producing pipe is steel, although other metals such as Aluminum, Stainless Steel, and Copper may be used in special applications.

Steel Pipes

Steel pipes are put to good use in numerous applications. The thicker, seamed pipes are used underground for moving gas, water and other liquids through towns and cities. They are also used for refrigeration units, heating systems, flagpoles, street lamps, and as a conduit for electrical wires.

Steel pipes can be defined as one of two types:

  1. Seamless
  2. Welded

Seamless Pipes

Seamless pipes, also called CDS Pipes (cold-drawn seamless pipes) are thinner and lighter weight. They are most-often used for transporting water and can also be used on bicycles, motorcycles and other machinery.

The thickness of the pipe is determined by what the pipe’s purpose will be. Very large diameter or thick-walled pipes are usually welded. They are used for heavy duty jobs like moving gas or oil from place to place, usually underground. They are straighter and can move a lot of material due to their size, but they are less flexible than seamless tubes and may not endure high heat or stress because of their welded seams.

Many pipe fabricating techniques exist, although, seamless pipe is made by a heating and molding process that rolls hot metal into a cylindrical shape. While rolling, a bullet-shaped object is pressed through the center of the cylinder to form a symmetrical, rounded opening. Once the seamless round cools, it is drawn to the size of the finished pipe and polished to protect the metal and preserve the pipe for maximum lifespan.

Welded Pipes

Welded pipe starts out as a long strip of metal. The strip is progressively rolled until its edges are brought together. The edges are then welded to close the gap leaving a seam down the length of the hollow pipe.

The final step for both seamless and welded pipes is to cut them to the desired length, package and ship them to our many satisfied customers. The pipes are produced at our factories and are shipped to our customers global manufacturing sites.
